Jerry Bears

One day in the land of the 70's two teenage kids had just gotten the new album to Grateful Dead. Now, Grateful Dead had just introduced Jerry Bears to the world (for Jerry Garcia), and they were on the album. It was a Friday night and the two kids were together listening to the album, it was getting close to midnight when the two kids ordered pizza. Approximately 30 minutes later the pizza arrived, they both ran downstairs to get the pizza. When they got back to the room they noticed something unusual about the album cover, the bears were gone!

They turned the music off and, they ran downstairs to see that the pizza box was on the other side of the room with no pizza in it. They both grabbed chef knives from the kitchen just in case something was to happen. As they slowly moved through the house they could hear very quiet footsteps as if someone were skipping. Then, they heard the music turn on. It was very quiet at first, but then it kept getting louder and louder. It was so loud that their ears started to bleed.

One of the kids ran up to the room and turned the music off, and as he was walking back a small green bear’s jump on his back and bit into his neck. The other kid who is at the bottom of the steps is screaming so obnoxiously he doesn't realize that there are different colored bears skipping in a circle around him.  The bear at the top of the stairs turns the music back on very loud so nobody can hear the boys screams, then the bears start to pile onto the boy and eat him. When the parents got home they saw the Grateful Dead album sitting next to the radio, so they played it!

Power

Author’s Note: The current essay is on the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson and its main theme, power. As the author of this essay I will be informing the reader on the novel’s main theme, power.

Winning the lottery is the greatest thing in the world, you can get over one million dollars, and you only have to pay a couple dollars for a ticket. Well, that’s not how it is in the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson. In this short story a small town with a population of three- hundred people has a tradition each week called “The Lottery”; you’d think they win something special, right? Well they don’t, the lottery is a tradition where the man in the family picks a slip out of a black box, if it is blank you are free to go but, if you have a small black dot placed in the middle of the paper your family has to pick once more, then the one in the family with the black dot will get stoned ‘till they die.

I believe that “Power” is the main theme because in the novel it shows how in that time period men had so much power over the women. Men would do everything fun, while the women stayed home and washed the dishes, or went to the grocery store for dinner. For the “Lottery” Mr. Dunbar was out with a broken leg, so the mayor asked his wife if her son would pick for him but he was still under eighteen so they would not let him, Mrs. Dunbar said she would do it, right there you kind of got a visual of how everyone stared at her like they were mad.

I also believe that “Power” is a main theme because in the story it shows how much power/ control the government has over these towns that participate in this “Lottery”. The government has had enough power to keep this insane tradition on even before Mr. Warner (the oldest man in town) was born! Mrs. Hutchinson was late to the meeting and everyone was mad at her, I can’t even begin to imagine what would happen if she had not shown up, they probably would have just killed her. That’s why people are afraid one what to do, if they don’t go they could be killed, if they do go they could be killed, and if they run away they could be caught and killed, so they are basically trapped in a big death hole.

So, as you can see from the above paragraphs “Power” should be considered the main theme of the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson. First, the men have way more power than the women do in that time period. Second, it shows how the government had all the power and complete control over the towns.

Cloning

Author’s Note: The current essay is about the controversial topic “cloning”. As the author of this essay I am informing the reader on cloning, it advantages, disadvantages, and my opinion towards it,

Cloning is a controversial topic in both the science and religion worlds. It is more researched in the science world, because they are working on kinks in the program. In the religion world it is more talked about, either being against it or with it. I believe that cloning shouldn’t be a loud in our country.

What is the process of cloning? Well, a male cell is taken away from the male, and then put into a holder so that there is no identity. The female cell’s nucleus is taken away, and then the two cells are put together making one. They put it back into the female letting it produce the clone.

Some advantages of cloning are, we could have food for the rest of our lives. We could find out things that we never have before about animals or just our world in general. We could use the clones for sick or dying people that are in need of a transplant, which they are starting to test, and so far it is pretty successful.

Some disadvantages of cloning are, cloning can cost millions of dollars for only one clone. Many of the clones have Large Organ Syndrome (LOS), that’s when the clone’s organs are very large at birth not letting blood flow through the body, so a lot o this money we are spending is going to waste. Although we could have an endless supply of food, they don’t know if the food is safe to eat yet, it could cause the human to get a certain disease.

I believe that cloning should not be a loud in our country, because we are already in so much debt we should be worried about debt more than spending money on something that isn’t even clear with fully working yet. If we weren’t in debt I would like to see where cloning goes, it sounds like a fantastic idea.

Crack in the mirror

Author's Note: The current writing piece is me putting myself in the position of being a crack in the mirror. As the author of this writing piece I am informing the reader on my life if I were a crack in the mirror.

It has been sitting in this store for years now. Nobody has bought it, nobody wants to buy it, I know it is all my fault, I am simply a crack in the mirror. I can't even see what I look like, am I ugly, am I handsome, am I fat, am I skinny? I may not ever find out. People come in and out of the store, but nobody ever stops to look at me. Now that I think about it, it isn't my fault. If the owner would get the mirror fixed he would no longer have to deal with me. Maybe if I were to talk to him, but that's against the crack rules. Section B paragraph 4 states that if a crack in the mirror ever talks to a human they will be killed. I think I would rather be killed than wait here in this stupid shop until I die.

So, the next morning when he is opening the shop I tell him to fix it. At first he looks around with confusion, so I say it again. "Please sir, the only way to get people to buy this mirror is it get rid of me." I said. He looks straight at me with even more confusion. "Are you talking, or am I just going crazy?" He asked. "I am really talking. Look, you want to sell people these items, correct?" I asked back. "Yes, of course" He answered. "Well, the only way to sell this mirror is to get rid of me, to fix the mirror." I told him. Later on that day after he had closed up the shop he took me to this mysterious place, it had words on the front of it, "Menard's". He gave me to the employees and they took me back in a dark room full of machinery and tools. All they did was take a piece of glass the fit perfectly in me, then they just glued it in. That was the end of my journey, I am no longer a crack in the mirror.

District Assessment 2012

Author’s Note: The current essay is for the PSD District Assessment 2012. As the author of this essay I am informing the reader on how the music genre “Rap” has changed over the years.

I believe that when rap started it wasn’t about anything else but having fun, and now it’s about getting money, being cool, and being considered a “gangster”. A lot of rappers today are just really egotistical, and they don’t rap for the love of it, only for the money.

Rapping is basically speaking or chanting with rhyming lyrics, often set to a beat. The rhyming the rappers use is considered by many people, a very sophisticated style of poetry. In many rap songs the lyrics have to do with the rappers previous, present, or future life. More than a century before rap was exposed to the world, West African musicians were telling stories rhythmically, with just the beat of a single drum. Indeed, these West African musicians were the base for modern day American rap music.

Rapping became popular to the U.S. in the 1970’s as a form of street art. But it wasn’t until 1979, when the Sugarhill gang released their hit, ‘Rappers Delight’. After record producers started to notice the interest in it, groups such as Run DMC and N.W.A. became a part of the rapping business, and its audience rapidly started growing. It wasn’t just African American rappers getting in on the act; groups like The Beastie Boys and Salt-n-Pepa were reaching to the top of the charts.

By the 1990’s, rap evolved from an old- school style rap with very simple lyrics to a new- school style rap with more complex lyrics. Rappers such as Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, and Tupac ruled the rapping world at this time, as did Eminem- one of the most popular white rappers of all time.

Today rap is still flowing all around the world through fans’ ears. The lyrics haven’t changed that much from the 90’s, although some of their voices really just irritate me so much. I have grown a passion for some rappers and their deep lyrics, not so much for others. I still feel that a lot of rappers today rap only for the money and nothing else.

Tone and Mood

Author’s Note: This essay is about “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, “Field Below” by Regina Spektor, and “Wordplay” by Jason Mraz. As the author of this essay I am informing the reader on the similarities and differences between each poem and the song for the Tone and Mood.

“Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell:

I feel that the author wrote this poem to send a message out to everyone destroying the environment. She is basically saying that yes, you are destroying the environment almost 24/7 but when it’s all gone you going to want it back so bad. The tone of the poem is aggravated because she is angry with the people of the world and how they are treating it. The mood of this poem is disappointed with themselves and how they have been treating nature. The tone is different between this poem and “Wordplay” by Jason Mraz, in this poem it is aggravated and in the song it is happy feeling as if he is on top of the world! The mood is also different, in this poem it is disappointed and in the song it gets you in the mood to do something big for the world, or just your community in general.

“Field Bellow” by Regina Spektor:

I feel that the author wrote this poem to say to the world that under all of the disaster (buildings, parking lots, technology, etc.) there is a wonderful world waiting to be discovered once more. The tone of the poem is depressed or sad, because she is sad that nature has been destroyed. The mood of the poem is sympathetic, because she is trying to get them to feel sorry and start changing the world. The tone is different between the poem and my song, in this poem it is depressed or sad, in the song it is extremely happy with himself. The poem and the song have the same moods, because she is trying to get people to do something for the world and feel great, while in the song he is trying to almost persuade them that they could also be on top of the world, they just need to get out and help with it.

Team to Legend

Author’s Note: This essay is about the team, Acme Packers’ journey all the way to a legendary franchise, Green Bay Packers. As the author of this essay I am informing the reader on the history of the Green Bay Packers all the way back to 1919.

One day two men, Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun sat down an amount of very athletic men in a conference room in Green Bay Press- Gazette building and formed a football team. Not too long before that day Mr. Lambeau asked the community “Why not? Why not form a football team here in the town of Green Bay.” The two men never even thought that that day would turn into the most successful creation in history of Green Bay.

Acme Meat Packing Company provided everything for the team, hence the name Acme Packers. By the middle of just their first season the company faded out of business. The first season was ended with ten wins and one loss, being the best record in Wisconsin, and some of upper Michigan. Not many people paid to go to the games but by 1921 the Packers were so good that Curly was offered a franchise in the National Football League. Customers still were not paying for the game so the team had to forfeit the season early.

The team was having many troubles after that, Curly had to pay the majority of their problems. They would get rained out a lot due to Wiconsin’s harsh weathers. The insurance company would never cover the prices so once again Curly would have to pay with his own money. As they were get deeper and deeper into the debt A.B. Turnbull lobbied town businessmen (Hungry Five) and turned the group into the Green Bay Football Corporation.

From the beginning all the way to the end, the Packers have been notices worldwide with winning over 13 championships in a 93 year franchise. These achievements represented a small town while other huge towns like New York City weren’t achieving that much with very much more money.

So, since the beginning of time when the “Packers” were created all the way to 2012, they have been recognized as one of the greatest teams in the history of the NFL. Curly Lambeau was the first head coach of the Acme Packers, one of his best players was Vince Lombardi who then became their head coach bringing home the championship many times. We now Mike McCarthy coach of the Green Bay Packers getting a spot in the playoffs each year as head coach.
