Power

Author’s Note: The current essay is on the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson and its main theme, power. As the author of this essay I will be informing the reader on the novel’s main theme, power.

Winning the lottery is the greatest thing in the world, you can get over one million dollars, and you only have to pay a couple dollars for a ticket. Well, that’s not how it is in the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson. In this short story a small town with a population of three- hundred people has a tradition each week called “The Lottery”; you’d think they win something special, right? Well they don’t, the lottery is a tradition where the man in the family picks a slip out of a black box, if it is blank you are free to go but, if you have a small black dot placed in the middle of the paper your family has to pick once more, then the one in the family with the black dot will get stoned ‘till they die.

I believe that “Power” is the main theme because in the novel it shows how in that time period men had so much power over the women. Men would do everything fun, while the women stayed home and washed the dishes, or went to the grocery store for dinner. For the “Lottery” Mr. Dunbar was out with a broken leg, so the mayor asked his wife if her son would pick for him but he was still under eighteen so they would not let him, Mrs. Dunbar said she would do it, right there you kind of got a visual of how everyone stared at her like they were mad.

I also believe that “Power” is a main theme because in the story it shows how much power/ control the government has over these towns that participate in this “Lottery”. The government has had enough power to keep this insane tradition on even before Mr. Warner (the oldest man in town) was born! Mrs. Hutchinson was late to the meeting and everyone was mad at her, I can’t even begin to imagine what would happen if she had not shown up, they probably would have just killed her. That’s why people are afraid one what to do, if they don’t go they could be killed, if they do go they could be killed, and if they run away they could be caught and killed, so they are basically trapped in a big death hole.

So, as you can see from the above paragraphs “Power” should be considered the main theme of the novel “Lottery” By Shirley Jackson. First, the men have way more power than the women do in that time period. Second, it shows how the government had all the power and complete control over the towns.

Cloning

Author’s Note: The current essay is about the controversial topic “cloning”. As the author of this essay I am informing the reader on cloning, it advantages, disadvantages, and my opinion towards it,

Cloning is a controversial topic in both the science and religion worlds. It is more researched in the science world, because they are working on kinks in the program. In the religion world it is more talked about, either being against it or with it. I believe that cloning shouldn’t be a loud in our country.

What is the process of cloning? Well, a male cell is taken away from the male, and then put into a holder so that there is no identity. The female cell’s nucleus is taken away, and then the two cells are put together making one. They put it back into the female letting it produce the clone.

Some advantages of cloning are, we could have food for the rest of our lives. We could find out things that we never have before about animals or just our world in general. We could use the clones for sick or dying people that are in need of a transplant, which they are starting to test, and so far it is pretty successful.

Some disadvantages of cloning are, cloning can cost millions of dollars for only one clone. Many of the clones have Large Organ Syndrome (LOS), that’s when the clone’s organs are very large at birth not letting blood flow through the body, so a lot o this money we are spending is going to waste. Although we could have an endless supply of food, they don’t know if the food is safe to eat yet, it could cause the human to get a certain disease.

I believe that cloning should not be a loud in our country, because we are already in so much debt we should be worried about debt more than spending money on something that isn’t even clear with fully working yet. If we weren’t in debt I would like to see where cloning goes, it sounds like a fantastic idea.

Crack in the mirror

Author's Note: The current writing piece is me putting myself in the position of being a crack in the mirror. As the author of this writing piece I am informing the reader on my life if I were a crack in the mirror.

It has been sitting in this store for years now. Nobody has bought it, nobody wants to buy it, I know it is all my fault, I am simply a crack in the mirror. I can't even see what I look like, am I ugly, am I handsome, am I fat, am I skinny? I may not ever find out. People come in and out of the store, but nobody ever stops to look at me. Now that I think about it, it isn't my fault. If the owner would get the mirror fixed he would no longer have to deal with me. Maybe if I were to talk to him, but that's against the crack rules. Section B paragraph 4 states that if a crack in the mirror ever talks to a human they will be killed. I think I would rather be killed than wait here in this stupid shop until I die.

So, the next morning when he is opening the shop I tell him to fix it. At first he looks around with confusion, so I say it again. "Please sir, the only way to get people to buy this mirror is it get rid of me." I said. He looks straight at me with even more confusion. "Are you talking, or am I just going crazy?" He asked. "I am really talking. Look, you want to sell people these items, correct?" I asked back. "Yes, of course" He answered. "Well, the only way to sell this mirror is to get rid of me, to fix the mirror." I told him. Later on that day after he had closed up the shop he took me to this mysterious place, it had words on the front of it, "Menard's". He gave me to the employees and they took me back in a dark room full of machinery and tools. All they did was take a piece of glass the fit perfectly in me, then they just glued it in. That was the end of my journey, I am no longer a crack in the mirror.
